PIA Socratic Seminar Reflection
The seminar we did in class helped to show me that there are multiple ways in breaking down questions and finding the answers. Such as how others will go directly to the text after reading a question to find the best answer and compare that to all of the answers, as well as the people who try and find all the distractors before answering the questions. Something that made me think about something I hadn't thought of before would have been that your first answer is usually the right answer. Such as the way that Tyree thought about changing his answer for one of the questions while everyone else got that same answer, which showed that usually when people second guess themselves they mess themselves up and that benefits no one.
I think that Zach's statement about about why one of the most controversial questions was correct, "Which was the one on what would be the best them of the passage?". He said that really both of the answers fit into each other yet one of them is just a better generalization which was why it was right which I understood fully and was why I changed my answer. I think that I only wish that I could have clarified what I said and Rachel responded to it saying she disagreed but we still got the same answer. I just feel that I should have clarified what I meant more.
I think the thing that worked the best was that everyone tried to get everyone engaged. With Lina as the discussion leader I feel that she did a great job at keeping the pace of the seminar and getting everyone involved. Such as when Liza and Tyree hadn't said much she made sure to try and get them involved so that they could receive their points.
I feel that the only thing that probably needs improvement is probably using more examples from the text in our examples and responses, because without evidence how are we to ever know when something is correct. Without evidence we lose the purpose of reading to answer questions because how are we to find the answer without the text and the evidence presented.
